Readability Matters and Exquisitive Partner on New Digital Tutor
Readability Matters and Exquisitive have joined forces to release a new digital tutor focused on enhancing text readability. The Readability Explorer gives students an opportunity to experience reading with different text formats and make selections to personalize their reading experience.
Personalization in education is more than a trend; it’s a necessity. Research conducted by Readability Matters, The Readability Consortium, and a growing readability research community demonstrates that personalized text formats can significantly improve reading speed, accuracy, and comprehension. By adjusting digital text features, including font size, character, and line spacing, reading can be personalized for each reader, optimizing their performance.

Readability Matters is excited to partner with Exquisitive on this innovative assessment tool. Exquisitive’s tutoring modules were developed by a group of experts behind the award-winning DARPA-developed digital tutor. The team has deep expertise in creating effective learning modules combined with a platform carefully architected for data analysis. Previously, the Exquisitive team observed the difference a font change could make to improve learner outcomes. Together, we can explore new ways of assessing personalized reading formats in a naturalistic environment. Assessment is a necessary first step for the educational use of personalized reading formats.
Exquisitive’s new Readability Explorer will evolve to be used to assess personalized reading formats, a significant step in personalized education. Through guided selections, students discover their optimal reading format by exploring changes in font, character width, and spacing. The partnership combines Readability Matters’ expertise in personalized text formats with Exquisitive’s cutting-edge digital tutoring technology. The result is a tool designed to assist students in identifying text formats that are best for their unique needs.
Future Plans
This is just the beginning. This first release of the Readability Explorer demonstrates the possibility to deliver text format personalization assessment in an interactive tool. It explores reader preferences related to character width and spacing. Future enhancements will add additional readability features (size and line spacing, for example), additional grade levels and assess reading speed and comprehension to refine and deliver text format personalization recommendations. When complete, the Readability Explorer will be added to other Exquisitive tutoring modules.
